Therapeutic Recreation Month - Meet Ryann

Building a rapport and making sincere connections, in my eyes, is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. If I can be the reason someone smiles in their day then I believe I have succeeded.
— Ryann

1. What is your name and what is your position at Green Acres Foundation?

My name is Ryann and I am a Rec Therapist.

2. How long have you worked at Green Acres?

I have been with the Foundation for 4 months.

3. How would you describe the occupation of a recreation therapist to someone who has never heard of it?

Those of us who are in this field know that we get this question asked A LOT! Recreation therapy uses leisure activities to help individuals with specific health conditions to improve their skills, abilities, and emotional well-being. We set personalized goals with the client as well as the healthcare team and develop a plan to meet the needs of the person in care.

4. Why is recreation therapy important for seniors?

Recreation has many positive impacts on seniors in assisted-living communities. Some include but are not limited to: strengthening social connections, increasing self-esteem, boosting cognitive and physical functioning, and minimizing symptoms of depression. The transition from living at home to living in a community can be a difficult adjustment. Recreation provides numerous opportunities to experience and learn new things in addition to enjoying old hobbies that they are familiar with.

5. What do you love most about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is simply the population I work with. Building a rapport and making sincere connections, in my eyes, is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. If I can be the reason someone smiles in their day then I believe I have succeeded.

6. Any activities that were successful or unique that you would like to share?

One program that I found to be successful was called, “Precious Connections”. This activity involves the residents interacting with children under the age of 5. Intergenerational programs are so meaningful. We had residents come out of their rooms that typically don’t on a regular basis and that is exactly why we do what we do. Giving seniors the opportunity to feel a sense of community is extremely important.

7. Since February is Recreation Therapy Month, is there anything you would like to share or add to the conversation?

Rec Therapy has brought an endless amount of joy into my life. My wish is that it would become more recognized in the healthcare system going forward.
