Therapeutic Recreation Month - Meet Mac

  1. What is your name and what is your position at Green Acres Foundation?

My name is Mac, I am a Recreation Therapist at Green Acres Foundation.

  2. How long have you worked at Green Acres?

I just hit my one year milestone this past November.

  3. How would you describe or summarize the occupation of a recreation therapist to someone who has never heard of it?

As a Recreation Therapist, I empower people to build strong connections with their communities, and enhance self-image, by providing meaningful programs throughout the day.

  4. Why is recreation therapy important for seniors and senior housing communities?

I believe it is important to sustain self-confidence throughout your life with something Recreation Therapists call a strength based approach. When I first meet residents, I often ask, “what is something you are good at?” They tell me all about the leisure activities and hobbies they pursue. When the Recreation Therapist takes that into account when planning programs, the more meaningful lifestyle the senior can enjoy. We really can make a difference through various leisure pursuits, which is pretty cool!

  5. What do you love most about your job? Could you describe a little?

First and foremost, I love all the treasured stories I get to hear. I am a history nerd and having the opportunity to gain a bit of wisdom is something I would never trade. I am interested in getting to know every resident I speak to because they come from all walks of life and have rich stories.I have had so many conversations about how older generations have dealt with tough times, such as the winter storm in 1967 that snowed everyone in. From hearing about world events, what they did to pass the time, recipes they have tried and places they have been, I am able to take bits of each story and implement them into my own life. They all are so fascinating and I encourage anyone to gain this wisdom.

  6. Any activities that were successful or unique that you would like to share?

Since working here, I have been introduced to Java Music Club which combines stories and music into one program. It is based on peer support where residents are free to share their feelings, strengths and advice to help other co residents with similar backgrounds. By doing this, residents can find value and purpose in assisting one another. Peer support is very important in this stage of life and I find this program very invaluable to have on our calendar.

  7. Since February is Recreation Therapy Month, is there anything you would like to share or add to the conversation?

Recreation Therapists all agree it is a rewarding career where  you can enrich other people’s lives and also your own.  If anyone has a family member or friend interested in starting a career in Recreation Therapy, do it! It has a lot of different perspectives you can be creative with!
