Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of John and Berendina
February is the month of love, and what better way to celebrate than with a truly inspiring love story?
John and Berendina’s 70th wedding anniversary is February 11, 2025—a remarkable milestone for a couple whose love has only grown stronger with time.
Even though their journey together began Many years ago, their devotion to each other is as deep as ever. They would be happy to do it all over again!
So, how did these two find each other? Let’s take a trip down memory lane!
It all started when John and Berendina were both in their early 20s. They met at a play, where two mutual friends introduced them. John and his friend sat in the row in front of Berendina and her friend. From there, they started seeing each other more often. While it wasn’t exactly “love at first sight,” they were drawn to one another, and their connection only grew stronger over time.
When asked when they first fell in love, John said the moment of realization came when they decided to “go steady.” He chuckled, adding that it was a good sign her father didn’t throw him out the door! That’s when John knew Berendina was the one. Their relationship developed slowly but surely, and it wasn’t long before they both knew they were meant to be together.
John and Berendina’s wedding story is one of simplicity and joy. They were first married at city hall, followed by a church ceremony. The reception was held at Berendina’s mother’s house, a gathering full of family, friends, and lively conversation. Berendina remembers the house being packed, and the atmosphere incredibly busy—but in the best possible way. It was a day full of love and laughter, marking the beginning of a beautiful adventure together.
Their marriage has been an exciting journey that has taken them around the world. From Australia, to the Netherlands, and across the seven seas to Canada, they even spent seven years living on a ship, exploring the world together. There was no adventure too big or too crazy for them to take on as a team. They did spend two years apart when Berendina moved to the Netherlands, but John soon followed to join her and their two children.
For both John and Berendina, their fondest memories are tied to traveling together. Whether they were visiting new places or simply exploring life, the memories they’ve created on their journeys have been priceless. John adds with a smile, “I may be 91 now, but I’m still in love with her.” It’s clear that their love has never faded; it has only deepened over time.
John and Berendina are the proud parents of four children—two boys and two girls. The first two were born in Holland, the third in Australia, and the youngest in Canada. They are also blessed with four grandchildren, each one adding more love and joy to their already full hearts.
John and Berendina’s marriage has lasted 70 years because, in their words, “There was no question of parting.” For them, divorce was never an option—part of their commitment to each other was grounded in their Christian faith. But it wasn’t just about faith; they genuinely never wanted to part.
When asked for their advice on how to maintain a long-lasting marriage, Berendina offered this simple yet powerful wisdom: “You have difficult times. It’s not always ideal. You have to work it out, and it is worthwhile working it out.” There’s no denying that marriage takes effort, but for John and Berendina, the ups and downs have only made their bond stronger.
As John and Berendina celebrate their 70th anniversary, their love is a testament to the power of commitment, patience, and shared adventures. Through their ups and downs, they have built a life full of laughter, love, and memories. Their story is a beautiful reminder that true love doesn’t just happen—it’s a journey that requires effort, but it’s all worth it when you’re walking side by side with the person you love.
Happy anniversary, John and Berendina! Here’s to many more years of love and adventure. 💕
